Early Learning Center

  • 8:45 am to 12:00 pm (half-day program)
  • 8:45 am to 2:45 pm (full-day program)

Children may be dropped off from 8:25 am. Half-day students do not stay for lunch.

Elementary (Grades K - 5)

  • 8:20 am - 3:00 pm

Middle School (Grades 6 - 8)

  • 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

High School (Grades 9 - 12)

  • 9:00 am - 4:00 pm*

* Grade 11 will start at 8:30 am on days 1, 3 & 6 of the 10-day rotation. Grade 12 will start at 8:30 am on days 1, 6 & 9 of the 10-day rotation.

What after school activities take place and how do you sign up?

We offer a wide range of student activities across physical, creative, intellectual, and service-oriented pursuits as detailed on Activities page of our website.

Elementary activities vary from year to year and updated information is listed in the elementary activities catalog posted before the start of each season. Elementary after-school activities run from 3:15 – 4:00 pm.

Middle and high school after-school activities run from 4:10 – 6:00 pm.

Are there school uniforms at YIS?

Early Learning Center (E1 & E2)

Children in the Early Learning Center are not required to wear a school uniform at any time.

Elementary (K – 5)

No school uniforms are required for grades K - 5 on a daily basis. Student dress is to be neat, tidy and seasonally appropriate. When going on field trips or other external functions, students should wear a red school sweatshirt or T-shirt. The elementary PE T-shirt (see below) may be used for this purpose and many students choose to wear them daily. School sweatshirts, T-shirts and PE uniforms are available at the school store.

Middle and High School (Gr. 6-12)

There is no uniform for students in grades 6 - 12. However, a dress code (published in the student and parent handbooks) must be observed. Essentially, this is sensible footwear, trousers, jeans or respectable length shorts/skirts/dresses.

What is the PE uniform and how do I buy it?

All students in grades K-12 are required to wear a PE uniform and appropriate footwear (indoor sports shoes). Students should not wear watches, long chains, bracelets, earrings or rings during a lesson (for safety reasons). The PE uniform consists of black shorts, a short-sleeve T-shirt and a long-sleeve T-shirt (red for elementary students and black with red highlights for secondary students). These can be purchased at the school store (the full kit is ¥6,000), as can YIS sweatshirts and tracksuits, which may be required in the case of some sports teams.

ELC students should wear trousers or shorts on PE days.

Where is the school store and when is it open?

The school store, also known as the Dragon's Den, is located at the back of the cafeteria and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8:15 – 11:00 am when school is in session. The store will also be open on Orientation Day and have extended opening hours for the first week of school.

What do students do for lunch at school?

Dragon Dining, our excellent food services vendor, offers delicious and nutritious lunch and snack service in the school cafeteria to students in grades K - 12. Students may also bring their own lunch. The service is a cashless, debit account system; after opening an account, students can charge meals or snacks by scanning their fingerprint or keying in their ID number. See the cafeteria page for further information.

ELC Students having lunch in the ELC may bring their own lunch or order lunch from Dragon Dining, which will deliver it to the ELC.

What about snacks?

You may send a snack to school with your child or snacks may be purchased at the cafeteria. Snack time is mid-morning. We encourage healthy snacks at YIS (i.e., no candy or other sweets). Please note that to protect children with serious food allergies, YIS maintains a peanut-safe policy; never bring to school or on school-related trips any food products that contain peanuts, peanut oil or peanut butter.


Our Cafeteria, Dragon Dining, follows the nutritional guidelines of the Children’s Food Trust and offers a range of options, including vegetarian choices, with menus posted weekly on their webpage. Students may also bring their own lunches if they prefer. Dragon Dining are available on the Orientation Day to answer any questions you may have.

How do children get to and from school?

YIS is conveniently located near popular Yokohama neighborhoods and with excellent access to reliable public transportation. We do not have a school bus. Children who live nearby usually walk or ride a bicycle to school. For those living farther away, the great majority take public transportation and some are driven to/from school. The closest train stations are Motomachi-Chukagai on the Minato Mirai / Toyoko Line and Ishikawacho or Yamate on the JR Negishi / Keihin Tohoku Line. Discount student commuter passes are available, details of how to obtain these are provided in Getting to YIS. There are also two public bus stops very close to the school’s main entrance (bus routes #11 and #20). If driving children to school, parents must use the designated pick-up/drop-off points at the playground gate or the ELC and strictly abide by our parking and traffic regulations. ELC children must be accompanied to/from their classroom by an adult.


The school provides most supplies, including notebooks, pencils, etc., and elementary students in particular rarely need to purchase additional supplies. ELC and Kindergarten students will require a pair of indoor shoes, preferably slip-on and rubber-soled. Middle and high school students may need some specialized supplies, but these are not required right away. For the first few days of school just send students with a backpack or school bag and a few pencils or pens. We also advise students to bring a hat and water bottle during the hot weather months (particularly for ELC and Elementary students).

Students in grades 9 - 12 will need to have a TI-84 plus CE graphing calculator, which is available for purchase online or at many electronics stores and by order from the school store. The calculator must be this model and not another type of graphing calculator.

Will my child receive a computer / iPAD?

As part of our Connected Learning Community, all students in grades 6 – 12 receive a school-issued individual laptop computer, which they may use at home as well as at school. Students in grades K - 4 will receive a school-issued iPad, which must be kept at school. Grade 5 students will receive both a laptop and an iPad, both of which will be kept at school. Other shared computing resources are used in other elementary and ELC grades, and iPads and other devices are also used for some particular applications in the secondary. Details will be provided on your child's first day of school. The cost of all computing devices is included in the tuition fee.

What is the parent portal and how do I access it?

The parent portal is a secure, password-protected site that connects directly to the school’s central student information database, also known as Veracross. It provides personalized access to student schedules, grade reports, assignment calendar (MS/HS), school directory, parent-teacher conference sign-up, family profile and more. You will be sent login credentials prior to the start of school and may access the portal directly at https://portals.veracross.com/yis or from the Portals Login link at the top of the homepage of the YIS website. Families starting mid-year will receive their login credentials after their first day of school.
