The YIS library is a center for literacy and research, a place that fosters and celebrates the love of reading, and acts as a learning and social hub for the whole school community.
The library's extensive collection includes print books, audio books and ebooks in English, Japanese and nine other languages. These books can be borrowed by the entire YIS community, including students from Early Learning Center to Grade 12, teachers and parents. Our librarians are always happy to help readers find what they need and frequently provide suggestions through displays, the Books of the Day on the library's twitter account, the middle school Books and Brownies book club meetings, special visits to the ELC and more. Students can also search the library catalog to find the right book, e-book or audiobook for them.
Our makerspace, the Creative Commons, provides a space for students, staff and parents to use technology and traditional craft materials to solve problems, innovate and create. It is in constant use for both curricular and extra-curricular activities. Dragon Media use the space to produce their popular Elementary School news show, classes and clubs regularly use the green screen for their multimedia projects and the PTSA's parent-child Maker Saturdays has brought families together to make, play and create. During the year our IT team and librarians work together to offer regular creative skill workshops during lunch on topics as varied as coding, knitting, electronics and making playdoh.
There's always something happening in the YIS library. With the librarians, the elementary and secondary library councils also offers a range of events for students such as themed lunches, reading parties and the ever popular "library lock-in", a book themed sleepover organized by students from the Library Council. We offer a range of digital resources to help students in school and at home. Students are given access to our Research Portal and Libguides to guide them in the effective use of databases, digital collections and other electronic subscriptions to help with class work.
