Middle School Program

In order to gain the maximum benefit from our summer program, middle and high school students are strongly encouraged to attend the full two-week session. However, they do have the option of signing up for just the first week for each course.

 

MS English and English as an Additional Language

For students entering grades 6, 7 and 8 in 2024 - 2025 (9:00 am - 11:00 am)

This course is an opportunity for students to build upon existing skills and knowledge and prepare for the academic challenges that await them. Small classes with excellent student:teacher ratios provide personalized support. The course gives students opportunities to extend and refine their literacy skills through a variety of methods including vocabulary and grammar expansion, techniques to express and support ideas in an organized manner, and close reading skills. At the beginning of the program, specific and attainable goals are set by each student and students work toward these goals to ensure they improve in areas of study specific to their individual needs. The course is held five days a week for two hours.

 

MS Math

For students entering grades 6, 7 and 8 in 2024 - 2025  (12:00 noon - 2:00 pm)

Middle School Math is an enrichment opportunity for students to build upon existing skills and knowledge and prepare for the academic challenges that await them in the upcoming school year. Students will work on enjoyable mathematical activities that aim to provoke interest and understanding of particular topics in the subject.  These may take the form of games, group projects, and simulations. There will be opportunities to work independently as well as in groups. The course is held five days a week for two hours.

 

ENRICHMENT COURSES

Enrichment courses are available to mix and match with the above courses to create a personalized fit for each student.

 

MS Critical Thinking and Time Management Skills

For students entering grades 6, 7 and 8 in 2024 - 2025  (9:00 am - 11:00 am)

Do you love to learn, discuss, and think critically about current global issues and challenges facing society? Do you also feel like you need to develop better organizational skills to really thrive at school? If so, this summer school course is for you. Sign-up for Critical Thinking and learn the productivity strategies used by the pros for goal setting, time-management, keeping track of the things you need, and note keeping all while working with captivating ideas that need your attention. 

 

Camp Games

For students entering grades 6, 7, 8 and 9 in 2024 - 2025 (12:00 noon - 2:00 pm)

Camp Games is for those students who like getting to know new people while being active both outside and in the swimming pool. If you enjoy game play, cooperation and some competition but don’t really care who wins and loses (or these are areas where you want to grow), this cooperative games summer school course is just the thing for you. Stay active this summer enjoy time in the water and have a great time in the process. You will learn different strategies for working with other people, building your communication skills, and developing as a team member. (High level swimming skills are not required but students should feel comfortable and safe in the water).

 

HS/MS Dragon Basketball Camp

For students entering grades 6, 7, 8 or 9 in 2024 - 2025 (12:00 noon - 2:00 pm)

The Dragon Basketball camp is designed to provide a positive and energetic environment in order to develop fundamental skills for all levels. Daily activities will include different drills and games geared towards guiding players through individual and team skills. Emphasis will be placed on sportsmanship, team play, leadership and simply enjoying the game. The course is held five days a week for 2 hours in the afternoon and open to players in Grade 6 through 9.

 

HS/MS Swim Camp

For students entering grades 6 - 12 in 2024 - 2025 (9am - 11am)

Swimming camp is designed to help you develop your swimming skills further as well as improve your fitness. Each day we will look at how we can improve our technique for Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly. We will also learn how to dive properly into the water. As well as improving our swimming we will also spend some quality time playing water based team games to work on our communication skills, teamwork and simply to have a little fun.

Pricing

Each course is ¥60,000 and extends for the full two weeks. Although it is encouraged to attend the full two-week program, it is possible to opt for one week at ¥35,000 per course.

 

Lunch

Lunches are not included for middle and high school students. However, students may bring a pack lunch or purchase meals during break from Dragon Dining.

Health & Safety

To ensure that students have a healthy and safe summer experience at YIS, we will have several assistants in addition to our teaching staff, and our school nurse will also be on duty during summer program hours. We also ask parents to make sure we have the most up-to-date medical information about their children, and that students bring hats, sunscreen, insect repellent and water bottles everyday.
