High School Program

In order to gain the maximum benefit from our summer program, middle and high school students are strongly encouraged to attend the full two-week session. However, they do have the option of signing up for just the first week for each course.

 

High School Math

For students entering grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 in 2020-2021 (9:00 - 11:00 am)

This course is an opportunity for students to build upon existing skills and knowledge and prepare for the academic challenges that await them. Small classes with excellent student:teacher ratios provide personalized support. The course gives students opportunities to extend and refine their literacy skills and understand how literature pervades the world around them. At the beginning of the program, specific and attainable goals are set by each student and students work toward these goals to ensure they improve in areas of study specific to their individual needs including text analysis, writing tasks, and oral presentations. The course is held five days a week for two hours.

 

High School English and English as an Additional Language

For students entering grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 in 2020-2021 (12:00 noon - 2:00 pm)

Enrichment courses are available to mix and match with the above courses to create a personalized fit for each student.

 

Camp Games

For students entering grade 9 in 2020-2021 (12:00 noon - 2:00 pm)

Middle School Camp Games is an excellent opportunity for those of you who like being active, enjoy being around and working with other people. If you enjoy game play, cooperation and some competition but don’t really care who wins and loses or these are areas where you want to grow, this cooperative games summer school course could be just the thing for you. Stay active this summer and have a great time in the process. In this activity, we will work with ideas of creativity, action, and play to maximize engagement and fun while at the same time, keeping everyone in play and involved. You will learn different strategies for working with other people, building your communication skills, and developing as a team member. Join this activity to find out what “Play Hard, Play Fair, Nobody Hurt” is all about.

 

Essay Writing For College Applications plus optional consultations in the afternoon

For students entering grades 11 or 12 in 2020-2021 and recent graduates (9:00 am - 11:00 am)

Essay Writing for College Applications is an opportunity for students to brainstorm, plan, write, revise and polish various Common Application essays, supplemental essays and personal statements for the college/university application process. Students will build key writing and storytelling skills and learn important techniques for shaping unique, compelling essays and statements. In addition to peer feedback, students will receive personalized teacher support and guidance throughout the writing process. The course is held five days a week for two hours in the morning, with additional consultations available in the afternoon. Although students may join the course for either one week or two weeks, participation in the full two weeks is recommended since the course is cumulative, with work completed in the second week building on skills gained in the first. Students should bring their own computer. For students without computers, laptops will be available to borrow from the school.

Dragon Volleyball Camp

For students entering grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 in 2020-2021 (12:00 noon - 2:00 pm)

Dragon Volleyball Camp is a program to help students develop their volleyball fundamentals for all skills levels. Students will practice drills to improve their passing, serving, and hitting. Different defensive and offensive court positioning will be introduced. A mini tournament will be held at the end of the course for students to demonstrate their progress and develop sportsmanship and leadership skills. Students must bring a water bottle and appropriate court shoes. The course is held five days a week for 2 hours in the afternoon.

 

High School Art

For students entering grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 in 2020-2021 (9:00 - 11:00 am)

High school art is a great opportunity for students who are interested in furthering their skills with different mediums and materials. Students will take part in a variety of art-based activities which will be focused on practical techniques and skill-building with paint media, three dimensional media and digital media such as photography and illustration. This would also be an excellent opportunity for IBDP students to work on their studio artwork and portfolio for their course. This will be available every morning for the full two weeks, so we can have full access to the kiln and pottery spaces in this time as well.

 

Secondary Drama

For students entering grades 6 - 12 in 2020-2021 (1:00 - 4:00 pm)

Drama Workshop is for enthusiastic, motivated theatre-makers who would like to experience a variety of theatrical forms and roles. Students will have an opportunity to follow their interests and explore performance and production responsibilities in various theatrical styles. Participants can also learn and experiment with technical theatre roles and experiment with theatrical design to discover how production elements of light, sound, and multimedia can impact a performance.

Pricing

Each course is 55,000 yen and extends for the full two weeks. Although it is encouraged to attend the full two week program, it is possible to opt for one week at 30,000 yen per course.

Early Bird Special of ¥49,500 for two weeks, or ¥27,000 for one week (equivalent to 10% discount) if registration is made by April 24th.

Early Bird Special of ¥99,000 for two courses for two weeks (equivalent to 10% discount) if registration is made by April 24th. 

 

Lunch

Lunches are not included for middle and high school students. However, students may bring a pack lunch or purchase meals during break from Dragon Dining.

Health & Safety

To ensure that students have a healthy and safe summer experience at YIS, we will have several assistants in addition to our teaching staff, and our school nurse will also be on duty during summer program hours. We also ask parents to make sure we have the most up-to-date medical information about their children, and that students bring hats, sunscreen, insect repellent and water bottles everyday.
