FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

How can I apply for my child(ren)?

Registration for our Summer Programs will open on our website soon.

Besides the registration form, what other documents are required?

Current YIS students and students joining YIS in 2024-25 who have already completed the online enrollment process need not submit any additional documentation, although parents should make sure that medical and emergency contact information recorded in the YIS parent portal is up to date.

Students not currently attending YIS are asked to provide a photocopy of their most recent report card. In addition, non-YIS applicants must complete a Health History & Emergency Contact Form, which you may fill out online here.

Please note that all students must have private health insurance coverage.

Is there priority registration if my child already attends YIS?

No, Summer School 2024 will be running on a first-come, first-served basis. However, all applicants should note that a Summer School slot is not confirmed until payment has been received.

What grade level class should my child enter?

Students should enroll in the grade level that they will be entering in the 2024-25 school year. For example, if the applicant is finishing Grade 3 in June 2024, he/she should apply for the Grade 4 class offered at our summer program.

We encourage students presently in Grade 5 to sign up for the courses offered to our middle school students to help them prepare for the rigor ahead.

Students presently in Grade 8 can choose to either continue working with Middle School Math/English, or register for High School Math/English.

We will be returning to our home country for part of the summer. Can my child attend for only one week?

In order to gain the maximum benefit from our summer programs, students are strongly encouraged to attend the full two-week session. The elementary program does not have a one-week option and tuition is not pro-rated if students leave early.

Middle and high school students may sign up for just the first week or for two weeks.

What are the registration and tuition payment deadlines?

Classes may fill up fast, so you are encouraged to register early. Registration closure dates will be clearly stated. Please note that registration is not considered complete until payment has been made in full. If we are unable to offer a class for which you have applied, a full refund will be issued.

What are the deadlines for getting a refund?

We understand that plans can change, therefore parents are entitled to a full refund after registration until June 7th. After June 7th, no refunds will be given (except in the case where we are unable to offer a class for which you have applied).

What is the school's policy if the school cancels Summer School due to unforeseen circumstances?

If the school has to cancel the summer programs due to the pandemic or other unforeseen circumstances, a full refund would be provided if cancellation is made on or before June 17, 2024. In the case that cancellation occurs between June 18 - 21, a 50% refund would be issued. If we have to cancel during the 2nd week (June 24 - 28), we will provide a 25% refund.

What should my child stay home from Summer School if they are sick?

It is especially important that students stay home if sick and that Mrs. Bowering in the YIS Health Office (nurse@yis.ac.jp or 045-621-4027) be informed at the earliest instance if a student, staff member or anyone in their household develops symptoms of or tests positive for COVID-19 or the flu. For more details on when to stay home and on our mask-wearing policy, please see our Wellbeing page.

Are there any scholarships?

Scholarships are not available.

How big are the classes? What is the student to teacher ratio?

Class sizes are set to ensure that there is a student to teacher ratio that facilitates plenty of individual attention. The minimum number of students in a class will be five, the maximum twenty.

Who are the teachers?

Our summer program teaching staff are all qualified teachers with experience in international schools across the world. They have a wealth of experience and progressive ideas to engage and improve student learning.

Does my child need to bring a computer?

Computers (laptops and/or ipads) will be available at school for elementary students in the summer program. Middle and high school students should bring their own laptops to school. If a non-YIS student does not have his/her own laptop, we can arrange one for him/her to use.

Who do I contact if I have further questions about the program?
