Kindergarten

For Students Entering Kindergarten in 2019-20

 

Two-week program from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday - Friday

Keep learning during summer and prepare for your next school year. Kindergarten and Grade 1 Summer school program will include: Math, Reading, Language (writing/phonics), Art, Music, PE, and Library time. For writing, Grade 1 children will be encouraged to use more writing strategies to built structure. Kindergarten children will be exposed to the letter names and sounds. A variety of materials will be used in order to differentiate the children's learning at their own level. We will provide various supports for children of each level. Math for both grades will include counting and shapes through math activities. Especially for young learners, it is important to have many opportunities to play with mathematical materials which can be found around us to build their mathematical thinking and their number sense. Our guided inquiry will have the theme of nature. In both grades the learning environment will be Reggio inspired and inquiry based. For students in need of EAL support, our EAL staff will come in to the class to assist and work with them on their individualized programs. Please have the children bring their hats, sunscreens, insect repellents and water bottles everyday.

In Grade 2 summer school, students will continue to develop their reading, writing and math skills through a variety of engaging inquirites and games. In Mathematics, students will build on their knowledge of basic number facts, measurement skills and data handling abilities. In Language, students will become authors by writing short stories and poems. Students will also continue to develop their abilities to read just right texts. In Guided Inquiry, the students will become true scientists by conducting experiments, observing what happens and recording their findings. The students will also have regular Art, Music, PE, and Library time. For students in need of EAL support, our EAL staff will come in to the class to assist and work with them on their individualized programs.

Dragon Soccer Camp

 

For Students Entering Grade 2 or 3 in 2019-20 (9:00-11:45 am)

Dragon Soccer Camp is latest addition to the YIS summer school program. Run by Coach Kazu and Coach Kunihiro of Coerver Coaching, this camp is designed to provide students the opportunity to develop fundamental soccer skills, in a safe and fun environment. The camp is held five days a week in the mornings for Grade 2 and 3, and again for Grade 4 and 5 in the afternoon. Dragon Soccer Camp runs for the full two weeks. Packed lunches are welcome, though Dragon Dining will provide a nutritionally balanced diet of healthy snacks and meals designed to optimize children's energy levels throughout the day. When partaking in Soccer Camp, students are welcome to also sign up for other options such as Basketball Camp (Grade 4 & Grade 5 only) or grade level classes when they are not in Soccer.

 

 

Grade 3

For Students Entering Grade 3 in 2019-20
Two-week program from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday - Friday

 

In Mathematics, Grade 3 students will be working with problem solving and place value fluency with numbers up to 10,000. Number sense will be developed by using manipulatives, inquirying into number patterns, playing games, and exploring various mental math strategies. During language arts, students will summarize narrative stories and particiapte in mini-books clubs sharing and growing their ideas beyond the text. Students will explore the magic and wonder of keeping a writer's notebook to generate ideas and new entries. Together with their teacher and their classmates, students will inquire into mindfulness and it's impact on the body and learning. Students will observere and track personal changes and daily yoga will be introduced in Grade 3. Art will connect to the Unit of Inquiry. For students in need of EAL support, our EAL staff will have pull out sessions during Literacy/Language Arts and work with them on their individualized programs.

Dragon Basketball Camp with Coach Hauet gives an introduction to the fundamentals of the game. The camp is designed to provide a positive and energetic environment to excite kids at all skill levels. Daily activities will include different drills and games geared towards guiding the beginner through the basics and helping to form proper habits at an early age. The course is held five days a week for 3 hours in the morning. When partaking in Basketball Camp, students are welcome to also sign up for grade level classes for the afternoon session or Soccer Camp if they are in Grade 4 or 5.

For Students Entering Grade 4 in 2019-20
Two-week program from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday - Friday

Students will be engaged in both collaborative and individual learning experiences. In Mathematics, students will be inquiring into number systems and place value up to millions. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies will be taught, practiced, strengthened and extended by eventually applying them to real life situations. In language, students will engage in reading, writing, viewing and presenting. Readers' theatre will include shared reading, discussions related to texts and presentations. Writing will focus on creating detailed fables, turning them into scripts and presenting a puppet show. To extend our thinking, Maker Hour will ask students to engage in the design process by researching, designing, testing and redesigning toys and objects that not only work but look cool. Maker Hour requires skills from areas such as literacy (inquiry & research), math (measurement & construction), science (testing & problem solving), art, social and self management, which are invaluable for students entering grade 4. For students in need of EAL support, our EAL staff will have pull out sessions during Literacy/Language Arts and work with them on their individualized programs.

Keep learning during summer and prepare for your next school year. Students in the Grade 5 Summer Program class will be engaged in a range of collaborative and individual learning experiences. In Mathematics, the students will focus on maths challenges and play maths games to solidify their basic maths knowledge, whilst also strengthening their problem-solving skills and strategies. In Language Arts, the students will be working in learning centers that focus on reading comprehension and learning how to write. Together with their teacher and classmates, students will have the opportunity to work on a 2-week inquiry unit based around problem solving. For Art, students will be able to enjoy working on a variety of artistic ideas and use various materials to play, inquire and create! For students in need of EAL support, our EAL staff will have 'pull-out' sessions during literacy/language arts sessions and work with them on their individualized programs.

Health & Safety

To ensure that students have a healthy and safe summer experience at YIS, we will have several assistants in addition to our teaching staff, and our school nurse will also be on duty during summer program hours. We also ask parents to make sure we have the most up-to-date medical information about their children, and that students bring hats, sunscreen, insect repellent and water bottles everyday.
