Student Awards

Every year, selected high school students receive awards to honor their contributions and achievements in various aspects of school life. The awards range from recognizing academic achievement to outstanding community service to dedication to a particular cause. The awards are decided through faculty selection or voting among the high school students. Below is a list of the high school awards with links to past recipients.


The Council of International Schools (CIS) International Student Award

This award is given to a student or group of students who best exemplify the attributes of international citizenship through the development and advancement of internationalism. The student(s) must have demonstrated a clear commitment to sustained interaction with students of other nationalities, languages or ethnic backgrounds in a spirit of international understanding and cooperation. The students' achievements should encompass efforts directed beyond participation in regular school activities, and the student(s) should demonstrate efforts to creatively solve known or emerging problems, acquire and effectively deploy knowledge or resources beyond those immediately available in the school, and directly involve peoples of other cultures, racial and ethnic backgrounds. The recipients are chosen through faculty nominations and votes.

2018 Recipient: LGBTQ+ Human Rights Group


The East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) Global Citizenship Award

This award is given to a grade 11 student who is seen to embrace the qualities of a global citizen. The student is a proud representative of his/her nation while respectful of the diversity of other nations, has an open mind, is well informed, aware and empathetic, concerned and caring for others encouraging a sense of community, and strongly committed to engagement and action to make the world a better place. Finally, this student is able to interact and communicate effectively with people from all walks of life while having a sense of collective responsibility for all who inhabit the globe. The recipient is chosen through faculty nominations and votes.

Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS) Recognition Award

This award is given to a student who has shown extraordinary achievement in the promotion of Japanese culture. It is presented to one student in grades 9 through 12 in recognition of the efforts made to learn and assist others in understanding and appreciating the culture and people of Japan. The recipient is chosen through faculty nominations and votes.

2018 Recipient: Edward Mascall-Robson


The Kerr Plaque

This award, which is the oldest award of the school, is given to a grade 12 student who has performed above and beyond expectations during the school year, has been actively involved in school life since joining high school, and has been a tremendous ambassador for the school. The recipient is chosen through faculty nominations and votes.

Werlin Making A Difference award (HS)

Consistently lending a hand to another students, younger or older. Volunteering to make a difference in under-privileged lives Promoting teamwork and common accomplishments over individual recognition Simple acts of kindness, thoughtfulness and caring for others Demonstrable acts of earth stewardship and environmental activism One who makes a positive difference for the people he or she comes in contact with.

Additional Awards

In addition to the awards listed above, the following academic awards are given to high school students:

  • MYP Academic Awards - Awarded to students in grades 9 and 10 who score a 7 in four or more subjects and the highest descriptor Approaches to Learning in two or more subjects.
  • DP Academic Awards - Awarded to Students in grades 11 and 12 with the highest (Gold Award) and second highest (Silver Award) GPA in their grade.

Separately, there are awards for sportsman/sportswoman, artist, actor and musician of the year, Student Council President, and various athletic and fine arts awards to recognize achievements in individual sports and activities.
