Come to the YIS gym any day after school or check out the playground during any lunch break, and you will hear the perpetual sounds of volleyballs smacking the floor, the net and on occasion, other students. There is seemingly an endless love affair with volleyball at YIS that has been going on for at least the past 2 years. Nowhere was this more apparent than over the past 3 weeks on Friday's when 5 teams took to the courts in the first annual High School Volleyball World Cup.
Run by the Dragon Council, there were initially some doubts as to how successful it would be. Perhaps, we had overestimated the YIS love affair with volleyball as only 5 teams registered (Germany, Iceland, Zimbabwe, Japan and Australia) to battle it out to see who would be crowned the volleyball champions of YIS. Those doubts quickly were swept to the side, as the players on the court were engaged the moment the first whistle blew. Perhaps more impressive, were the growing number of students and parents who came to cheer on each week.
In the end, it was not about who took home the title (though if you would like to know Germany emerged victorious in a thrilling 3 set final against Zimbabwe) but rather, the camaraderie, sportsmanship and love of the game on display that let everyone know that the tournament was a success and would be around in the years to come. Hope to see you all at the 2018 YIS Volleyball World Cup and good luck to Germany in defending their title!
