This Week in YIS Sports

After last weeks deluge of games, it was a bit more laid back week for YIS athletics, though I am sure a few of the coaches and players would beg to differ - especially those who attended the WJAA Varsity Boys & Girls Basketball Tournaments. In fact, basketball was the theme of the week, as no other sport had a match since the last update.

The varsity and JV boys basketball teams got the week started this past Wednesday with their final home games of the season. A great crowd came out to support both teams and the fans certainly did not go home disappointed as both teams beat next door neighbors St. Maur. The JV team comfortably took the game 40-29, before the varsity boys took the floor, and had the home crowd on the edge of their seats as the game literally came down to the final shot of the game. In one of the most exciting games of the season, the varsity boys came back from 5 points down with 20 seconds left on the clock, sending the game into overtime on a buzzer beating 3 point shot! In over time, the boys managed to close out the game, and send the crowd home happy. The final score was YIS 42, St. Maur 37.

The following day the MS boys basketball team took to the hardwood in a friendly match against BST. Unfortunately, for BST a number of their players were not able to make the trip, leaving them with just 1 substitute and thus a little out gunned by the YIS mixed team which ran about 16 players deep. The resulting final score of 46-24 showed the difference in depth, but credit to both sides for showing excellent sportsmanship throughout the contest. Two days later, a team that certainly had no issues with depth showed up on the doorsteps on YIS, as long time KANTO powerhouse, ASIJ swung by for 2 games against YIS. The B team boys fought hard, but could not match up with the size of ASIJ, falling in the end 59-25. A team followed, and in a great team performance, the boys battled to the bitter end, with their 4th quarter rally coming up just a bit short, as they fell to ASIJ 44-37.

Meanwhile, in Kobe and Osaka that Varsity Girls and Boys were partaking in their respective WJAA basketball tournaments. For the boys, it was a rough tournament, which had ominous beginnings when one of their starters could not travel on the day due to illness. Things only got harder from there as they were drawn into a difficult group that included a senior ladened home team, as well as the 2 time defending tournament champs. To their credit the boys gave it their all, but in the end lost both matches on the first day of the competition. At the start of the 2nd day, things started off much better, as they were able to beat MC Perry to make it to the semi-finals. However, they again had to match up against the defending champs, and although they performed much better than the previous day, could not match the overall size and skill of a very strong EJ King squad.

For the girls it was a different story, having come into the tournament without having a win this season. After the first day, though they played some of their best basketball so far, they still had not produced a victory. Come Saturday though, that all changed as the girls took on hosts CA, and produced an incredible 47-27 victory for that elusive first win. In the semi-finals, similar to the boys, they had a rematch with tournament titans, EJ King, and could not keep up with their size and skill. However, in the 3rd place match, the girls dug deep and pulled off a stunning win over SOIS 32-29, to send the team home with a 3rd place trophy, but more importantly, positive momentum for AISA in 2 weeks time.

A bit of a 'lull' this week for YIS athletics as there are no tournaments to attend. However, still plenty of games to get excited for. Hope everyone has a chance to come out and cheer on the Dragons!
