Springing into the Break
by Brinya Tananone
Spring break is only 48 hours away but still plenty of activities are taking place this week at YIS, even carrying over a day into the holidays! However, before we dive into the week of games ahead, a quick recap of all that took place last week regarding your Dragons.
The MS Girls Basketball team tipped off their season in grand fashion with both the A and B teams beating St. Maur in a hotly contested but friendly affair. The B team won by a score of 18-12 while the A team eked out a 21-16 victory. The HS Varsity Boys Soccer team followed up on Friday, also against St. Maur and in a bit of an upset-- the Cougars beat our boys 2-1. It was a tough loss for the team, but credit must be given to St. Maur boy's soccer, who beat YIS for the first time in over 9 years! The YIS JV boys managed to extract a little revenge on behalf of their varsity teammates in the game that followed, beating St. Maur JV 3-0.
The JV Soccer Boys then had the daunting task of competing in the RECCOSS Cup, hosted by the German School. Just how daunting? Our JV was the only JV team in the tournament that included some local Japanese high schools and varsity international schools. However, while the boys did not win, they came out of the tournament having more than held their own, and felt that they could have easily come away with a few wins. It was a great learning experience for the team, and one that will surely benefit them going forward.
While the JV had their tournament this past weekend, the varsity soccer boys will have theirs this weekend. But before that takes place, first off the varsity girl's soccer team officially opens their season today against St.Maur up at the YCAC, in their only warm up to the WJAA tournament, kicking off in two days time. The girls are replacing 8 starters from last year's team, but both the coaches and players feel they can be just as strong.
Speaking of WJAA, both the varsity boys and girls teams have their first tournaments of the year as the boys are off to CA in Kobe tomorrow, while the girls have the opportunity to shine in front of the home crowd at the YCAC. The tournament runs all day Friday and Saturday the 10th and 11th of March so please feel free to stop by and cheer the Dragons on!
Also, on Saturday, the MS girl's basketball team's season continues at Sacred Heart, with tip-off taking place at 9 am. Good luck to all our teams this week, and have a wonderful Spring Break!
