I find myself sitting at my desk writing this message, wondering where did that year go. I know every year feels like this, but maybe as you get older this feeling is compounded a little more. It has been a good year, but especially busy, and like everyone around me I am a little tired and looking forward to the holiday ahead. But the feeling that really stays with me now is how very grateful I am for the people with whom I spend my day with here, whether they be students, teachers, parents, cleaners or cafeteria staff. Everyone comes with their own passion and energy that brings everything together and makes YIS the place it is.
A major focus for our team this year has of course been the planning of the new campus. You will have received a message from me last week with an update on where we are with our planning and some illustrations of what it will look like. I also introduced our YIS2C capital campaign to raise money for campus enhancements in a variety of areas, which I hope you will consider supporting. See our new Support YIS page for details.
I am really excited in how the plans are evolving and the fact that our design brief to capture the essence of YIS and our community is being truly captured in the designs that Kengo Kuma and his team are presenting us. After the break we will be entering the next stage of design that will allow us to involve the greater community even further and I hope that many of you will be able to attend the presentation evening on September 18th where we will be able to share some of that detail and have Kengo Kuma himself talk to you about his vision for our school.
There are so many people who contribute to our school every year so I always hesitate to single out particular people in a message such as this, but I am going to do so on this occasion. We have many families leaving us as we normally do at this time of the year and I send my thanks to you all for all you have contributed and my best wishes for your adventures ahead. However, I would like to make a special mention of the Bajaj family. Arun Bajaj has served as a member of our Board of Directors for seven years and has been a wise sage when we needed it. Likewise, Debra Bajaj has been a member of our board of trustees, but has also been the Chair of our PTSA for the past 3 years and an active supporter of all events in our community. I am very grateful to them both for their leadership and care.
Finally, I want to thank our students, your children. I have been in numerous meetings with individual faculty members recently and when I ask them what brings them the most joy, the answer is always the students, and usually this sets them off on a long explanation of the latest interactions they have had and the growth that they have seen and feel glad to have witnessed and been a part of. Our students are the lifeblood of the school and we are incredibly proud of them, as you should be too.
I wish you all the very best for the holidays ahead. I hope you find time to be together as a family and enjoy being together and making new memories.
Thanks for all your support as always,
