The Season 3 Sports Awards took place this past Monday, May 7th, in the Cafeteria, officially wrapping up not only the MS Season, but YIS athletics as a whole for the 2017-18 school year. It is a cliche, but it is incredible how fast the year seems to fly by, particularly in the middle school. It is also incredible how much growth and development takes place from August to May. That development was on full display for all to see this past weekend at the Middle School KANTO Championships where Boys Baseball and Girls Basketball competed at ASIJ, while Track and Field headed over to Oi Futo. Here is a quick recap of how the weekend went.
The Boys Baseball team went into the tournament as the number 1 seed, and had high hopes to make the finals and even potentially bring home the championship. They accomplished their first goal, when they came back from being down 4 runs to beat next door neighbors St. Maur 6-4 in the semi-finals setting up a finals showdown with St. Marys. It did not look pretty at first, as the boys struggled to overcome some early miscues and before they new it, were down 9-1 after 2 innings! However, the boys were resilient and rather than fold they battled back and nearly came all the way back to win in a what would have been a finals classic. Unfortunately, their comeback came up a bit short, and in the end they lost to 10-8.
For the girls basketball team it was a bit of a disappointing end to what had been an incredible season. After finishing the regular season as the number 1 seed, and going undefeated. The girls went into the KANTO finals with high hopes to bring back the championship to YIS. However, it was not meant to be, as the girls lost a heartbreaker to Seisen in the semi-finals losing by 1 point! Though it stings now, there is no doubt that the girls will look back with fond memories on what was the most successful MS Girls Basketball season in 10 years.
While baseball and basketball was going on at ASIJ, the YIS MS track and field team partook in the KANTO championships at Oi Futo. Though they were by far smallest contingent there in terms of overall numbers, the team performed incredibly well, as multiple personal records were set, topped off in the end by Misal taking first place in the MS boys high jump!
It was an incredible weekend that was capped off this past Monday at the Season 2 and 3 Sports Awards, where we got the opportunity to celebrate each team, and a few individuals accomplishments. This ceremony took place at the YIS Cafeteria and over the course of the proceedings each team took the opportunity to reflect on the season, as well as recognize their respective individual award recipients (1 Most Improved Player, 1 Most Valuable Player and 1 Coaches Choice per team). It was a celebratory morning for all, and all the recipients were truly deserving of the acknowledgment that they received from their peers. Special thanks to all the students who either spoke on behalf of the teams or made the video presentation, as well as all the parents who came to share in the celebration.
Congratulations to all the teams on an incredible year of athletics! We are already looking forward to another fantastic year in 2018-19!
