Middle School Parent Newsletter - April 2016

Dear Parents,

It's good to see the warmer weather! Spring is finally here and summer will follow hard on its heels. Only 6 weeks left from next Monday. As I write, the middle school students are in the midst of their annual exams and things seem to be going smoothly. In the next weeks, we will have a very busy time. In no particular order, we will have MS Sports Awards, Annual Awards, Graduation, Spring Concert, field trips and end of semester report cards. A busy time, indeed. At the same time, planning is well underway for the next academic year.

MS Sports Awards

These will be held in the Auditorium on June 1, starting at 9.15am. Awards will be given for the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Most Improved Player (MIP) and Coach's Award for all sports that ran through the year. Students, under the guidance of Mr Brinya Tananone, our Activities Co-ordinator, will largely run the presentation. Parents of those students receiving awards will be contacted – confidentially! – by Brinya, ahead of the ceremony. The winners of these awards will then be in the running for the Athlete of the Year at the final Awards presentation on June 13.

MS Annual Awards

This ceremony will be held on Monday, June 13, starting at 9.10am in the Auditorium. Awards presented will include:

  • John Tanner Award, which is given to a grade 8 student who staff feel has best represented the values of the school and been a good ambassador for these in their time in Middle School.
  • CIS Internationalism Award, which is given to either an individual middle school student or group of students for their contribution to internationalism within the school community.
  • MYP Academic Awards will be given to those students who achieve a final level of achievement of 7 in four or more subjects plus the top descriptor – Highly Developed – in two or more Approaches to Learning (ATL).
  • Athlete of the Year
  • Dramatist of the Year
  • Musician of the Year
  • Koto Musician of the Year

As with the Sports Awards, parents of students receiving awards will be notified in advance.

MS Graduation

This will be held in the Auditorium on Tuesday, June 14, starting at 7.00pm. This is a simple ceremony to celebrate the end of our grade 8 students' time in middle school, but still with some formality. The ceremony takes around 75 to 90 minutes. More information will be sent closer to the event.

MS Spring Concert

This concert, showcasing the best of our middle school performance artists, will be held on June 2, from 7.00pm in the Auditorium. As usual, there will be singers, instrumentalists and dancers.

ES Sports Day

This was held last week and I am including it in my newsletter because of the fantastic performance by a group of around 20 of our middle school students. Under the guidance of Mel Hamada, our Head of PE, the MS students took on a variety of roles in helping to run the day. They received great feedback from both ES teachers and parents. Well done!

Best regards,
John Snowball
