Last Week in Review and What's Coming Up Next
Incredibly busy week for YIS sports, as the high school wraps up their 3rd and final season of the school year, while all the MS teams compete across Tokyo and Yokohama. However, before we get to the week ahead lets take a look back on the week in YIS athletics.
The high school girls soccer had quite the week of soccer as they played 3 games in the span of 4 days! Needless to say, the team was tired at the end. The girls started the week off in fine fashion with a confidence-building win against KANTO league rival Seisen 2-0. Unfortunately, the rest of the week was not as successful; although the girls battled hard, they fell to very strong sides in ISSH 6-0 and ASIJ 4-0 on Friday and Saturday respectively.
The high school boy's soccer team did not quite have the slate of games that the girls did, with 'only' games on Friday and Saturday. Friday the JV took on St. Maur and showed that the future of YIS soccer is bright as they took down the cougars 6-0. While the varsity followed up that fine performance with an excellent 2-1 victory over CAJ in what their coach described as the teams best game of the year.
Meanwhile, this past Friday, the high school badminton team made their 2nd ever trip down to Kobe for the WJAA badminton championships. Over the 2 days of competition the YIS boys and girls battled CA, NIS, and SOIS to the best of their abilities, but could not quite pull off the upsets against much more established programs. That said, badminton is quickly becoming one of YIS's most popular sports, which bodes well for future competitions.
With so much going on in the high school, it is important to not overlook all that took place in the middle school as well. The MS girl's basketball team are showing incredible growth and development, with the B and C teams going through the week undefeated. If not for a tough loss to ASIJ, the A team nearly made it a perfect weekend for the girls. Still, nothing to be ashamed about with wins against both Nishimachi and Seisen.
While the girls spent their Saturday over at ASIJ, the boy's baseball team was across town at St. Mary's for the opening of the baseball season. The weather was looking ominous and their were fears that the games would be cancelled, but thankfully the rain stayed away and the boys were able to showcase all their hard work over the past month. The day started with a game against the hosts St. Mary's and in a baseball rarity the game finished in a 2-2 tie! St. Maurs followed and in a wild affair the boys came out on top 8-5.
Finally, the MS track team opened their season at the Oi Futo stadium in the first of 4 meets this year. Similar to baseball, the weather was iffy, but the events stayed on track and the YIS team performed incredibly well with the team scoring points in long jump, high jump, and sprints.
Congratulations to everyone on an exciting week!
Things are not quite as chaotic this week, but there are still quite a few games and events on the docket. Boys baseball kick things off with a friendly match against St.Maur's again over at Honmoku Fields this Thursday at 4:30, before going back into league play this Saturday with games against ASIJ and a rematch with St. Marys, Saturday morning! The MS girls basketball is also back on the court this weekend as the A, B and C teams all make their way over to Seisen. Also back in action is the MS track and field team that will be heading back to Oi Futo for the 2nd of their 4 meets on the season.
Finally, the high school boys and girls varsity soccer teams head off to Busan and Seoul respectively this Thursday –Sunday for the final AISA tournament of the year. We wish both teams the best of luck and know they will represent YIS to the best of their abilities. Of course, we would be remise if we did not acknowledge our seniors as this is not only the last tournament of the year, for them it is their last AISA ever! Thank you seniors, for all that you have done for YIS athletics!
