At the end of last year, the YIS community was saddened by the news of John Eric Hasegawa's passing. John, a former YIS student and long-serving member of our Board of Trustees since September 2005, was a supportive and valued part of our community. His mother, Mrs. Paul, was a YIS teacher of Japanese for many years up until the mid 1980's. Funeral services were held at Yokohama Christ Church on January 5th. John is survived by his wife Noriko, daughter Erica and grandson, Gavin.
John studied at YIS up to grade 7 before moving to St. Mary's in Tokyo for high school, as YIS did not yet have a high school. After graduation, he attended John Hopkins University, studying science for undergraduate and graduate degrees. Some time after returning to Japan from the States, John joined the congregation of Yokohama Christ Church and enjoyed the weekly fellowship. He was the Rector's Warden for quite some time. Messages poured in from around the globe with the news of John's death, best summed up in the words of Bill Werlin, former YIS Board of Directors Chairman: As I go forward my memories of John will be wrapped in these words -- 'There are two kinds of light: the glow that illuminates and the glare that obscures.' His was a special glow."
