ES Student Collects Clothes for Refugees
After hearing about the plight of refugees in a discussion in his Boy Scout troupe, Saneyuki along with other members of his troupe felt they could help the refugees even in a little way. They decided to work with retailer Uniqlo to collect clothes from their schools to send to the refugees.
He spoke to YIS ES Service Learning supervisor, Mr. Saez, about his idea, then visited classes in the school, explaining what refugees are, why they are in the situation they are in, and how his project would help them. He placed collection boxes around the school for several weeks, then sorted through the clothes once they were collected. He collected nine bags and boxes for his project. His parents then helped him take the clothes to Uniqlo, who would then send the clothes to where they were needed.
Saneyuki explains, "I had never heard about refugees before. I was surprised this was happening to people, so I decided to collect clothes because I thought I could help at least a little." He had never done anything like this before, and was happy to help people who needed assistance.
Through his compassion, understanding and initiative, Saneyuki demonstrates his idea of the school's mission, Live Learn Lead.
