Steel Structure Taking Shape at a Rapid Pace

As of November 23, 2020

  • Days Until Start of Classes in New Campus:  416
  • YIS2C Capital Campaign Progress: 7.3%

What a difference a month makes! Since the setting of the first steel column a little over a month ago, construction of the steel framework for the North Building has been proceeding at a rapid pace. The framework for the eastern and southern sides of the 4-story main classroom building is now complete and the massive 90-ton crane used to lift the steel beams and columns into place will soon turn the corner and work back along the western side to complete the building framework. Already, the distinctive roof line of the Japanese tea house-like structure, future home of the Japanese Cultural Program, is clearly visible on the top of the building. At the same time, scaffolding has been erected around the pool area in the South Building and a second 90-ton crane will soon move into place to start constructing the steel framework for that building, which will house the pool, gym and related facilities, as well as the health office and the ELC.

Along with the construction of the steel framework, crews are preparing the reinforced concrete floor slabs and installing stairwells, so a walk through the areas framed to date is already starting to provide a three-dimensional sense of the spaces that for so long have been two-dimensional planning drawings. In a recent walkthrough of the building it was particularly exciting to see the full outline of the auditorium space from the inside. Located in the performing arts wing directly above the music and drama rooms, the auditorium will have full theatrical fixtures and equipment and be able to seat over 410 people in a multi-function space with retractable seating on the main floor and balcony seating above.

As construction of the steel framework continues steadily toward scheduled completion in early January, we are currently hard at work in finalizing interior design features along with initial selection of furnishings, fixtures and equipment.
