The YIS Mentor Family Program, organized and coordinated by the PTSA, is a wonderful way to welcome new families into our school community. The aim of the program is to help families new to YIS, and perhaps new to Japan, settle smoothly into school and the local community. We try to match new families with mentors who have children in the same or similar grades, live close to each other or come from the same home country. Mentors can provide support and introductions to other parents and students, as well as offer guidance about adjusting to life in Japan and at YIS.
As the end of this school year approaches and the beginning of another one is not too far away, we will be losing a number of our existing mentors, so we are currently recruiting new ones to help with the program. The program relies on volunteer parents mentoring new families by offering guidance and support with their transition. The more volunteers we have from a cross selection of nationalities and year levels, the more successful the program can be. Please do not be afraid to volunteer because English may not be your first language. With over 50 nationalities at our school, we welcome a large range of home country language speakers. This year, we would like to have more mentors in ELC, elementary grades and those who can speak Korean. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please fill in this form or email our Mentor Coordinator, Iwona; she would love to hear from you!
