Main Construction Nears Completion

  • Construction Progress Toward Completion: 99%
  • Days Until Start of Classes in New Campus: 121
  • YIS2C Capital Campaign Progress: 10.7%

Just 15 months since crews started driving piles to launch construction of the new campus buildings, main construction of the new campus is quickly drawing to a close. Following a series of inspections in the coming weeks, handover of the facility will take place as scheduled on September 30th. Installation of IT and AV systems and specialized facilities, such as science labs and the cafeteria kitchen, along with delivery and installation of furniture, will take place in the coming months before the move at the end of December and start of classes in January.

Over the past six weeks since our last update the campus has truly been transformed, both inside and out. Interior finish work has been carried out at a dizzying pace, including painting of all classrooms and common areas, installation of doors, ceiling treatments and built-in cabinetry, and laying of wood flooring and carpeting. One of the most unique areas of the school now revealing its form is the library, with its curved lines and warm louvered wood ceiling and an array of different learning spaces created out of beautiful larch wood built-in shelving and other fixtures. Distinctively placed windows around the library provide natural light and intriguing lines of sight to and from the first and second floor hubs, adjacent English classrooms and other surrounding spaces.

Over in the South Building, a fanciful contoured play area has been completed in the open-plan Early Learning Center, giving a hint of the playscapes that students will be able to explore and create. Work is now finishing up on the large covered play area in front of the ELC along with a lovely wood deck to the side and a comfortable new outdoor habitat for Bob the turtle.

The new athletic facilities are also nearly finished and definitely provide a wow factor. The swimming pool has been filled with water (and a few rubber duckies during a recent inspection), court lines and YIS dragon emblems have been painted on the double gym floor, and the playing field in the front of the school is now covered with the green of the artificial turf surface. Meanwhile, landscaping work is proceeding apace, providing a wide range of natural greenery throughout the campus, from new trees and plantings around the perimeter and in front of the buildings to a Japanese garden outside the Chowa-an multipurpose facility on the fourth floor roof.

With the main construction coming to an end, there are far too many exciting developments to mention. Please enjoy the photos until our next update.
