Live, Learn, Read

Live, Learn, Read

by Librarians Jennifer Gibson-Millis and Viki Radford

"The library is the beating heart that keeps the pulse of a community alive and thriving."

– The Library Book by Susan Orlean

Our library is a place where our community lives, learns, and reads, but what is not so often talked about is how much our community works to keep our library thriving, and what it feels like to be a part of this. As Mojca, parent of a Gr.4 student, explains, it’s a vibrant, inspirational community:

"I find myself surrounded by whispers, laughter, the sound of turning pages in the serene comfort of shades from the shelves full of books containing exciting knowledge and entertainment. It represents the heart of the school to me, even more so due to Ms. Jennifer and Ms. Viki, they are the ones who make the heart beat."

Our library is wonderful precisely because of the community it serves: students, teachers, and parents. We couldn’t do what we do without your support - and there are many ways to participate.

Join our library volunteers to help make our library even better!

Every week responsible students  - and parents - return the books they’ve read to the book return boxes located around the school. For example, during the first week of school, over 1700 books were returned and thanks to our parent volunteers, the books were made available to students by the end of the day on Friday.

Your Library Needs You!

If you are interested in becoming a library volunteer, simply complete this Google Form, and we’ll be in touch for an upcoming training and information meeting.

Remember to return your books on time

Bringing library books back on time reduces the waiting time for popular titles, and ensures all students have access to the books they need. ES students can check out books for two weeks at a time, and MS/HS students can check out books for three weeks. If students in ELC to grade 3 have forgotten to return them, a printed notice will be shared with parents. For students in grades 4-12, students will receive a weekly email with a reminder for returning books and, after 90 days, an email will arrive daily for the student and their parents.

If you have lost a book, let us know so that we can arrange for its replacement. When we all work together, we can ensure that our collection is available to all students, and that all students can find the books they need, in the right place, at the right time.

Use our brand new PTSA grant funded Parent Resource Center to find books on parenting, literacy, and more.

Thanks to a PTSA grant a new satellite library for parents has been created. The Parent Resource Center (PRC) has a variety of books about parenting, child development and many other interesting topics. We hope you will stop by and take a look. If you would like to check out a book, please bring the book either to the first floor hub or main library self checkout stations. The books can be enjoyed for three weeks, and then they should be returned to the book return box in either the first floor hub or main library. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Gibson-Millis. Thanks again to the PTSA for the grant and happy reading!

Of course, the library is also available to parents for all your reading pleasure needs. Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in a Japanese classic, explore brave new worlds in our Sci-Fi section, or wanting to get ahead on your latest Book Club read, we have just the book for you! Come and browse our shelves - parents can check out up to ten books at a time for three weeks.

Our YIS Library appreciates all that parents do to make it the magical place that it is. We look forward to a year pulsing with reading sessions, research lessons, Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, and ES-HS library council meetings and much, much more.
