Grade 4 Expedition
Developed together with our outdoor education partner Canyons, the Grade 4 expedition facilitates inquiring into the statement: People’s experiences and the choices they make, can affect their growth and their sense of self. With the YIS classroom teachers and the staff at Canyons, students walk from school in their small, supervised groups to Ishikawacho station. From here, they take a 30 minutes public train journey to the island of Nojima in Kanazawa, Kanagawa. On arrival, students will gain a sense of place by setting up their tents at Nojima Koen campground. Staff will support the students in preparing and cooking food during the 3 day, 2 night experience. A play based approach will be used to teach camp craft skills and wilderness exploration while strengthening students' sense of connection to time and place. The natural green space and coastal environment of Nojima provides opportunities to enjoy mapping games, problem solving in groups and to develop a relationship with nature and people that connects to classroom learning. Students and staff will return to school by train.
Note: The cost of this expedition is covered in the school tuition.
