Grade 11 Snow Expedition
The Grade 11 Snow Expedition, developed together with outdoor education partner English Adventure, further extends students' skills and knowledge of expeditions and leadership, facilitating inquiry into the statement: Living and working in communities requires a shared understanding of leadership. The mountains of Tsunan, Niigata provide a picturesque setting for students to explore snow expeditions and winter camping. In small groups, students first use the time at English Adventure's Mountain Park lodge to prepare for their adventurous journey in snow conditions, exploring the concepts of risk and adventure and, with the expert guidance of English Adventure's mountain guides, equipping themselves with the necessary skills to explore the Tsunan alpine environment. Students are instructed on the use of snow-shoes, appropriate clothing, cooking and camping in cold conditions. English Adventure's Mountain Park base has been chosen due to its lower risk of avalanche, and weather and snow conditions are closely monitored in order to assess this risk and the option for students to camp in tents, snow caves or huts. After the expedition, reflection activities and a taste of downhill skiing on Mountain Park ski runs allow the students to solidify the learning of key concepts and transfer them back to school and family life.
