The grades 6 - 10 Music and Japanese Music courses follow the Middle Years Programme and are designed to:

  • enjoy lifelong engagement with music
  • develop the skills necessary to create and perform music
  • reflect on their own development as young musicians
  • explore the music across time, cultures and contexts
  • understand the relationship between music and its contexts

Grade 6
Music in grade six builds on the musical concepts explored and developed in the PYP music program. In the MYP the students use instruments as well as develop their vocal ability to investigate these concepts of music in greater depth. Students learn how to create the sounds and tone on their chosen instruments that they will need to create music and perform in ensemble. Through both enacted listening (being able to play what you hear) and eventually notation the students create, analyze and perform music. We explore local Japanese musical traditions along with western tonal harmony.

Grade 7
In grade seven the musicians continue developing their understanding of the concepts of music through their chosen instruments. Students investigate the elements of melody which provides a suitable path towards practicing and performing individually. Throughout the course they continue to perform and investigate music as an ensemble throughout the year. The students will explore improvisation through the genre of Blues music and create a podcast about an unfamiliar culture of music from a global context.

Grade 8
Students begin the year by exploring modern use of tonal harmony. In small groups, the students create and perform pop or rock songs using the skills and knowledge we develop as a class. They have the opportunity to explore the different roles in a band and as composers. They also explore how music is used  to help tell a narrative. By analyzing film scoring techniques to create emotion, they use multitrack recording to create their own film scores.
