Mathematics
The Grades 6–8 Mathematics courses are designed for students to:
- enjoy mathematics, develop curiosity and begin to appreciate its elegance and power
- communicate clearly and confidently in a variety of contexts
- develop logical, critical and creative thinking
- develop confidence, perseverance, and independence in mathematical thinking and problem-solving
- develop powers of generalization and abstraction
- apply and transfer skills to a wide range of real-life situations, other areas of knowledge and future developments
Grade 6
In grade 6 Mathematics students build on the skills developed in PYP Mathematics. They explore a variety of problem solving strategies and apply Mathematics to real-world situations. Students practice and work towards mastering their number sense and the skills related to manipulating numbers in a variety of forms including fractions, decimals and percentages. Students strengthen their spatial reasoning by learning about 2D objects and their properties. Throughout the grade 6 course students inquire into different types of patterns related to the form and structure of mathematical work. Students have opportunities to challenge themselves and apply their creative and analytical thinking skills through individual and collaborative learning experiences.
Grade 7
In grade 7 Mathematics students build on the skills developed in previous years. They continue to master their abstract and logical thinking skills as they delve deeper into algebraic representation and reasoning. Students use their algebra skills to describe the real-world situations and select appropriate problem-solving strategies to create a solution. Students extend their pattern recognition skills as they learn how to represent patterns with general rules using algebra. They learn how to verify their answers to check if the rules found are correct. Students continue to have opportunities to challenge themselves and apply their creative and analytical thinking skills through individual and collaborative learning experiences.
Grade 8
In grade 8 Mathematics students build on the skills developed in previous years. They focus on representing the information given in a variety of formats including using algebra and functions to describe patterns. During structured activities, students explore the concept of relationships between different data sets, in particular considering the properties and applications of functions. They also inquire into the world of probability and learn how to justify their solutions to real-life situations with the mathematics learned. Students continue to have opportunities to challenge themselves and apply their creative and analytical thinking skills through individual and collaborative learning experiences.
