Language
Language is essential to express, collaborate, and think creatively and analytically. Students use language to develop conceptual understandings and acquire knowledge. Language learning is developed authentically in a variety of written, spoken, visual and digital modes. Through inquiry, students have multiple opportunities to develop language skills across all subject areas.
Language learning is developmental. Students’ progress through phases of language proficiency by building onto their prior knowledge, skills and experience. Language plays a pivotal role in the exploration and development of the student’s personal and cultural identity. Learning language at YIS fosters and strengthens students’ self-awareness, perceptions, skills and knowledge, and in the process, nurtures positive interpersonal relationships.
