Elementary Mathematics

Mathematics is valued not only for its beauty but also for its usefulness in helping students to understand how the world works. Students use mathematical language to analyze, interpret and communicate. Connection to real-life situations enables students to see the relevance in their lives and that of society. Students are challenged to be curious and to ask questions in order to solve problems that are meaningful and essential for developing logic and reasoning.

The Mathematics program enables students to acquire essential skills and knowledge in Number, Measurement, Shape and Space, Data Handling and Pattern and Function. Students construct meaning and explain their reasoning through exploration and hands-on learning experiences using equipment, materials, objects, diagrams and mathematical symbols. They build on and develop their knowledge and skills through increasingly abstract problem solving. Students are encouraged to view themselves as mathematicians as they explore and enjoy the creativity and structure of Mathematics.
