How long have you been at the school?

I have been at YIS for 10 years.

What are your two favorite subjects, and why do you like them?

Recently, I have been enjoying music and Individuals and Societies (I&S). I enjoy music lessons the most with Mr. Patterson. I’ve been into music since I was in grade three. I play the violin as my main instrument, and the koto as my second instrument. I find music lessons very interesting here because it is rare to have a Japanese music program in an international school.

I feel like I&S is one of the subjects that gives me opportunities to learn about many things. I&S includes history, psychology and social studies. I can study a wide range of topics to learn about many ideas.

What non-academic activities are you involved in, and why do you like them

I go to violin lessons and koto lessons three to five times per week. I started playing koto in grade 6 and entered competitions at that time as well. I was fortunate to have received the bronze award for a competition in grade 7, and an honorable mention award in grade 8. I’ve been really passionate about my instruments and the beauty of music. More than liking my instruments, I need them. Without music, I wouldn’t be able to express my feelings and communicate well. I use my instruments as my style of communicating to others. My goal is to be accepted at the Juilliard School of Music for violin.

What is it about YIS that makes you happy or content?

YIS is able to support every student in a way that fits them the best. YIS respects every students personality and dreams. The teachers are able to identify every student's style of studying and growing and give them help in the areas they need help in.

Which teacher would you like to trade places with?

I would like to trade places with Mr.Patterson, my music teacher. I would let every student play whatever instrument they liked to play and support them the best I could.

Name three things you would like to have with you if you were stuck on a deserted island forever?

I would definitely take my violin, a pen and a blank sheet of music. I would compose music and play my violin.

Which celebrity/athlete/person in history would you like to meet in person?

I would like to meet Michael Jackson. I was inspired by his music when I was two years old. Then, I started studying English and several instruments as well. Without him, I wouldn’t be speaking English or enjoying music as I do now.
