Attended 1956 - 1960

How many years did you attend YIS?

I attended YIS for three years, from Kindergarten to Grade 3. We lived in a house three houses down from the school for ten years. Our house was demolished in 1966. Three homes were then built on the lot. That lot was later acquired by YIS and used as a playground. We are still in contact with our original neighbor who still lives there. We have a strong connection to the school and neighborhood because we lived in our house for ten years.

How many buildings were part of the school campus then, and can you describe them?

We accessed the school by the road that now leads to the Foreign Cemetery. The fire station was at the top left corner. The school had two single level buildings in an "L" shape.  There was one building on the left as you entered the playground and the second one was across the back.

Do you recall how many students would have been in your class?

I think we had around 20 students in my class.

What brought you and your family to Yokohama?

I was born in Holland, and my three siblings were born in japan.  Our father came to Japan for business.  We were not military or nor had any connection to the US government.

Where you are based now?

Our father bought a home in Hawaii in 1966. I still live in that home.
