Why did you choose YIS for your family?

My husband and I chose YIS because it has a good reputation and lots of positive reviews from other parents.

What is it about the learning program at YIS that you feel makes it unique?

My boys say that learning at YIS feels like play and not like studying. They are learning without feeling bored, overwhelmed or pressured.

Please describe a memorable moment from your time at YIS and how that has had an impact on you and your family?

The PTSA gave me an opportunity to do a cooking workshop to teach other parents how to make Kaya (a popular Southeast Asian coconut jam). I enjoyed leading that workshop very much and I got to know other parents better. I feel more connected to the community and the school through that experience.

What do your children enjoy the most about learning at YIS?

My boys can’t wait to go to school everyday. They are always telling me they play all day long at school. They love going to school so much that at first my husband and I were wondering if they were actually studying. It soon became clear that they were when my older son started to help me with my English and my Grade 2 son started to coach me in my pronunciation. The learning environment at YIS allows them to study in such a way that they feel like they are having fun all day.

Do you participate in activities or get together with other YIS parents? If so, can you tell us about some of the things you’ve enjoyed?

I enjoy attending the cooking classes and workout activities that are run by other parents. Most days I have a cup of tea or coffee on campus and catch up with friends too.

Do you live in Tokyo or Yokohama? How is the commute for your child/children?

We don’t live far from YIS, only about 10 minutes by car or public transport.

What sort of advice would you give to other parents who are considering YIS?

YIS provides an excellent education and environment for students, but the community for the parents is also fantastic with all the events and workshops on offer. I think coming to the campus and taking a tour is a good way to get a feel for the school and the community.

What excites you most about the YIS campus?

I love that there are so many facilities for my boys to enjoy and that the campus provides an environment where they feel like learning and play are one and the same.
