What year did you come to YIS, and where were you working prior to YIS?

I came to YIS in 2007. I worked in schools in Australia and China before that.

What attracted you to come work at YIS?

The progressive curriculum and healthy work culture.

What do you love most about teaching the students here at YIS?

It's really powerful seeing the amazing growth in our students over the time they are here. They become problem solvers, collaborators, communicators and leaders right in front of your eyes.

What areas of school life are you involved with at YIS?

I coach Middle School soccer and help run the Project Ocean service team.

How is learning different here at YIS?

Students have the opportunity to learn in the way that best suits them which leads to growth and autonomy.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of school, and what do you enjoy most about life in Japan?

I love to be outdoors whenever possible and enjoy swimming in cold rivers, hiking, fishing, snowshoeing, kayaking and diving.  I also love the food culture here in Japan which inspires me to cook at home.

Which YIS event(s) do you feel highlights who we are as a school?

Studentainment and Food Fair highlight who we are as a school because they are about sharing your talent and culture with the community.

What excites you most about working here at YIS?

As a PE teacher, the combination of the progressive curriculum and the campus facilities is very exciting. YIS provides an avenue for whole person learning which is not restricted to the classroom.

What do you love about living and working in Japan?

The easy access to different types of outdoor activities throughout the year is amazing.  Regardless of the season there is always something you can do.
