YIS serves the educational needs of the international community in Yokohama and the nearby Tokyo metropolitan area, in particular the children of foreign nationals here on temporary assignment. We welcome children of all nationalities whose families are committed to an international educational curriculum in English, including children of Japanese nationals who have been educated exclusively or primarily in non-Japanese schools overseas or at other accredited international schools in Japan.

YIS is truly an international school, with about 54 nationalities represented in our school community. Our educational programs and approach to learning reflect the best practices in international education today. As an IB Continuum School, we offer all three main programs of the International Baccalaureate: the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) in our Early Learning Center and Elementary School, and in the Secondary School the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) in grades 6 – 10, and the IB Diploma Program (IBDP) in grades 11 and 12.

About Our Programs

We are committed to guided and spontaneous purposeful inquiry that actively engages ELC students in their learning. The PYP curriculum is articulated in essential skills, concepts, knowledge, attitudes, learner profile, action and program of inquiry. We also incorporate the Reggio Emilia approach, encouraging children to wonder and to ask questions and documenting the process of their learning. We regard young children not as empty vessels to fill with knowledge; rather, we wish to light fires in their active minds.

Through the PYP we provide opportunities for students to develop understandings of essential concepts, skills, knowledge and attitudes that will enable them to be lifelong learners. Our students develop confidence in their abilities, think for themselves, question, express their opinions and respect the opinions of others. We value the development of the whole child in all areas of learning, and we support and nurture students in their social and emotional development as well as in their creative, linguistic, sporting and academic programs.

MIDDLE SCHOOL (ages 12-14)

The middle school years are a time for increased independence in learning. Our challenging and creative program helps students develop skills and understandings needed to meet the demands of high school while continuing to inspire a thirst for learning. The MYP provides an academic framework that encourages them to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and to become critical and reflective thinkers. This is complemented by abundant activities offerings and a strong emphasis on student wellbeing.

HIGH SCHOOL (ages 15-18)

Our academic programs in high school – the MYP in grades 9 & 10 and the IBDP in grades 11 & 12 – provide rigor and challenge as well as depth, breadth and variety across all disciplines. Choices in the arts, sciences, social sciences and languages are extensive, and our sports, arts and other extracurricular activities provide students with a wide array of enriching experiences and opportunities. In addition to the IBDP, students may also pursue the Global Citizen Diploma (GCD), a respected credential that draws on deliberate reflection to illustrate the unique perspective they each bring as a global citizen. All high school students complete the requirements that will see them graduate with the Global Citizen Certificate. YIS graduates are well prepared for higher education at leading universities around the world, and our alumni have achieved success in a variety of careers and endeavors.

Admissions Process
