One School

Guiding statement:

We believe that new learning builds upon a foundation of prior knowledge and experiences. Recognizing the importance of mutual understanding and interactions among all sections of the school, we work as one school to ensure smooth transitions and coherent programs that help improve learning as students progress through the school.

Outcomes:

  • Each student makes appropriate and sufficient gains in learning as teachers use an articulated E-12 curriculum and coherent programs to inform their planning, instruction and assessment.
  • All our students successfully transition between school sections and programs.

Individualized Learning

Guiding statement:

Learning improves when students with diverse needs and interests are given voice, choice and agency in their learning.

Outcomes:

  • All our students develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes to have agency over their learning pathways.
  • All our students effectively use technology to create, explore and improve their learning.
  • Each student’s learning needs are supported through structured learning opportunities and environments.

Languages

Guiding statement:

Language is central to identity and learning, enabling students to construct meaning and deepen their understanding of the world. We encourage multilingualism and are committed to the development of students’ English and Mother Tongue languages, as well as host country and other languages.

Outcomes:

  • All our students make sufficient and appropriate gains in their language learning as decisions, programs and policies are informed by well articulated and understood guiding statements regarding our language philosophy and vision.
  • All our students make sufficient and appropriate gains in their language learning as teachers in all sections and subjects use the Language Guiding Statements to inform planning, instruction and assessment.
  • All our students who study Japanese make sufficient and appropriate gains in their language learning, developing the ability to engage in authentic and increasingly sophisticated interactions within the host country environment.
  • All our students develop greater fluency in their Mother Tongue language through classes facilitated at school and/or guidance provided to families.

Professional Learning

Guiding statement:

Leadership in professional learning directly leads to improvement of student learning through opportunities for focused inquiry, action and reflection.

Outcomes:

  • Measurable improvement in student learning can be linked to our professional learning programs.
  • As individuals and as a school, we work in collaborative groups that regularly question and challenge our thinking to inform practice.
  • Improvement in student learning at YIS and beyond is achieved through the school’s leadership in quality professional learning in the Asia-Pacific region.
