Safeguarding

In conjunction with the school’s aim to “maintain a supportive, healthy and secure environment for learning and teaching,” YIS is committed to safeguarding the wellbeing of our students, staff and other community members.

What Is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding is linked to promoting welfare and includes:

  • protecting children from maltreatment

  • preventing impairment of children’s health or development

  • ensuring children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care

  • taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

Student protection refers to the actions taken to prevent and respond to violence, exploitation, abuse or maltreatment against children.

Our Student Protection Policy and Guidelines, along with other policies relating to safeguarding and wellbeing, are available on the Parent Handbook.

Our staff undergo annual training and updates in Safeguarding and Child Protection and we also provide the same training to a variety of other providers and partners with whom we work.

Safe Recruitment

Aligned with the recommendations of the International Taskforce on Child Protection, we hold ourselves to a high standard of safe recruiting practices with specific attention to child protection. These practices seek to support the employment of the best and most appropriate applicants while deterring unsuitable applicants from applying for vacancies, and identifying and rejecting those applicants who should not be working with children and young people.

Applicants to YIS undergo multiple reference checks and background screening and are required to agree to our Student Protection Policy and Guidelines as a condition of employment.
