Hello all,
The year is certainly galloping along and after many years on the equator, I’m noticing the change in seasons. The warmth is certainly welcome! As I write, the Spring break is just around the corner and I think many of us are eagerly awaiting the chance to unwind. As usual, middle school has been a busy place.

LAMDA
Under the experienced hands of Tim Evans and Shane Meiklejohn, our students were well-prepared for their presentations. This year, our examiner was Ms Vivien Heilbron, a very well-credentialed Scottish actor. She was very complimentary about our students and their presentations. Thanks also must go to our parent helpers – we had 20 volunteers who gave up their time to assist and help settle the nerves of our students. Thank you.

Community and Service
Our group has a few activities on our agenda: soon after the break, grade 6s will be organizing the “Tape The Teacher”, a fun project, but with a purpose. Students will be able to “vote” – at the cost of a 100yen – to have a teacher taped to the wall. Funds raised will go towards YIS’ contribution to the van der Poel project. Our grade 7 team will be organising a talent show – YIS Idol? – as part of their contribution to the Hope Foundation’s Wells project. The whole middle school will also be supporting the YIS sponsored “Adopt a Minefield” through the ‘One-Yen Drive”. There will be a special focus on this after the break. Finally, as a follow-up to Rice Week, a small team of volunteers from the CS Team will be going to the shelter in the Kotobuki-cho area to help cut up vegetables to prepare the meal for the residents. One of the side affects of the current economic downturn has been the number of people requiring a meal on Fridays – the centre has seen an increase of around 100 men each week. All in all, our students have shown excellent leadership in their desire to make a difference.

Middle School and Food Fair
The MS Student Council has taken charge of this great annual event. Currently, we are looking which activities the group will be running and then we will draw up rosters. This is again another excellent demonstration of community in action. I am very much looking forward to my first one, it comes with an excellent reputation.

2009 Honor Band and Orchestra:
On Saturday, February 28, over 50 Middle and High students travelled to CAJ for the annual Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Festival. YIS was represented very well and there were several Gold medal winners including: Masaki Tajima, High School Saxophone Ensemble, and Tomone Tanaka, who received a perfect score for her second consecutive year. Congratulations to all who participated!

On Mach 6, 7 YIS Band and Orchestra students joined over 90 other students from across the Kanto Plain for the 2009 KPASSP Honor Band and Orchestra concert, which was hosted by YIS. The Orchestra and Band did an outstanding job and, for the first time ever, the Band and Orchestra combined for a finale featuring Gustav Holst's Jupiter from The Planets.

Thank you for your support and have a safe and happy break
John Snowball
