Family, friends,
teachers, students, board members and dignitaries including the Governor of
Kanagawa Prefecture gathered in the YIS Gymnasium on the evening of June 10 to
celebrate the high school graduation ceremony for the Class of 2010. The
festive evening included speeches by Kanagawa Governor Shigefumi Matsuzawa,
Headmaster Simon Taylor and graduating students Kieran Miyamoto, Ankit Bhardwaj
and Marisa Jensen, as well as dramatic, musical and visual arts presentations
by other seniors. The senior class gift, a donation to go toward furniture for
the new senior lounge to be built this summer, was presented by Ellie and Julie
Sato. And the entire senior class joined together to sing a spirited renditioin
of “Wavin' Flag.”
The culmination
of the evening was of course the awarding of diplomas to the 59 graduands - YIS's largest graduating class ever - by Mr. Taylor, Bill Werlin, chairman of
the Board of Directors, and Dennis Stanworth, High School Principal.
In addition to
the several hundred people attending the ceremony in person, over 200 friends
and relatives from around the globe were able to view the ceremony live via
webstream broadcast. A video of the full ceremony may be accessed here.
