I am looking forward to starting the new school year with our new students and returning students, new ES teachers, our returning teachers and the new class assignments.
I am sure you will be very interested to know which teacher
your child has been assigned to, and who is going to be in your child's class.
This information will be available from 17 August, just before we re-open school for the new year. While our ES staff has been assisting in the class placement process, we usually have some unexpected
new students joining us, and so the class lists are not finalized until “the
last minute”. Once published the class placements are not negotiable.
I am excited about many changes for the ES and ELC for next
year, but there are two that stand out in my mind. The first is the
introduction of an ES Secretary. The ES staff and children will welcome Ms
Yukio Gonai in a very important
administrative support capacity. I am sure you have meet Ms Gonai in her
current role as Receptionist at YIS.
The other change I am excited about is the prospect of having some shade
areas on the ES playground. There have been many engineering, logistical and
local government regulations that have made this a long and complicated process, but our
expectations are high that we will start the year with some shade areas.
Mini World Cup
There have
been so many end-of-year activities happening recently that it is hard to know
which one to feature in my brief newsletter. However, the mini World Cup event
on 2 June is probably a highlight that involved all of the children from Gr 3-
5. I would like to especially
thank Mr Noon (Head of PE Dept), Ms Buchanan, Mr Kosaka, Mr Reynolds and Mr
Thomas for organizing this great event. Congratulations to “Brazil” for your
success in winning the very valuable trophy.

Mathletics
All of our
currently enrolled ES students will continue to have access to Mathletics over
the summer vacation. The children will use the same log-in details as they are
using at present. We have extended our contract with Mathletics for all ES
classes for the next academic year. We have found it to be a very good resource for
our students and our program.
ELC Birthday
ELC will celebrate its
10th birthday on Wednesday June 9th. A corner garden of stepping stones, a
mosaic mural, and wind chimes, has been constructed by the children, together
with the parents and janitors as a memory of this special year. In celebration of this year, a T-shirt
has been designed by one of the ELC children, depicting the ELC building. For the actual celebration day, the
children have suggested balloons, bubbles and cake... all the things we love
very much to make a wonderful party!

I hope you
have a happy end-of-school year and a relaxing vacations. For those families who are moving away from YIS,
back home, or to another country, I would like to wish you peace and success.
I am looking forward to leading the Elementary School and ELC again next year.
Happy holidays! Paul Neary
