On Wednesday afternoon we were honored to have a special guest at school. Shigefumi Matsuzawa, the Governor of Kanagawa, visited YIS as part of a regular program of monthly visits to schools in the prefecture. This was his first visit to an international school.
Governor Matsuzawa spent a good part of the afternoon at YIS, meeting first with members of the administration and governing boards for an overview presentation on the school's current programs and vision for the future. He then visited several classrooms, stopping to observe activities and speak with various students and teachers in the elementary, middle and high school sections.
After school, he met with a small group high school and middle school student council members and the senior academic leadership team for a wide ranging discussion. The Governor was particularly interested in learning about the backgrounds, interests and future plans of the students, and he shared his views and ideas on a number of topics, including education, economic development and cultural exchange.
As the accompanying pictures attest, Governor Matsuzawa clearly enjoyed his visit, and he expressed admiration for the quality of education and the warm, open atmosphere that he found at YIS. We were honored to welcome him to the school and look forward to even closer ties and more opportunities for exchange with our host prefecture.
