Welcome To YIS
Welcome to the Yokohama International School website. I would like to take this opportunity to give you a brief overview of the school and encourage you to look further around the website, including our blog-based teaching and learning platform called the Learning Hub, so you can get a feel for the school and find out more about the opportunities that exist here.
We are a very proud school that has been in existence since 1924, making it the second oldest international school in the world after Geneva International School, which opened on the other side of the world a few weeks prior. In addition to our long heritage, we are proud of the strong reputation that YIS has in the international school community as a school with passionate and dedicated educators driven to keep YIS at the forefront of international education while still maintaining its small school feel and strong sense of community and culture.
YIS has a student population of around 650 students from over 45 countries who are led by a diverse group of educators from 15 different countries. The academic program follows the three International Baccalaureate programs; Primary Years Program in the ELC and elementary school, Middle Years Program in grades 6-10 and the IB Diploma Program in grades 11 and 12. Being the most respected and widely followed academic program in the international school world, the IB is extremely well supported through resources and professional development and meets the needs of our internationally minded and globally mobile community. However, you will see that there is a distinct YIS feel to the program as our students get involved in the International Center for Japanese Culture here on campus, seamlessly integrate IT in their learning through our Connected Learning Community, take part in our growing community service program and, for those in the high school, have the opportunity to complete the Global Citizenship Diploma, which was developed here at YIS.
It is certainly a privilege to be an educator in the international school environment, but I firmly believe it is an even greater privilege to be a student in a school like YIS. Our students have huge opportunities to grow and develop within a caring and exciting learning environment and it is our aim to help them take advantage of everything that is on offer. In my experience, the students (and indeed the families) who get involved in school life and all that it has to offer are the ones who benefit the most and are most successful.
YIS is very well placed to take advantage of the safe and green environment that Yokohama provides. It is also extremely convenient for families who choose to live in Tokyo – just over 30 minutes away by express train – and a great number of our students commute to school everyday, with the nearest station only 5 minutes walk away from our front gate.
One important aspect of our school that is always highlighted by parents, teachers and students alike, is the great sense of community that exists here. There is definitely a sense of care and belonging and we are very proud of the diversity of our community members. This cultural mix is an important element of international school education and the experience of everyone involved is much richer because of it.
Finally, everything that happens in the school is based upon a strong sense of values, which is guided by our mission. These act as a guide in all that we do and go a lot deeper than just words on the page.
