It's hard to believe we only have less than two of weeks left of school before we break for the summer vacation. It is always a busy time of the year for everyone and one filled with lots of mixed emotions, as many of us are making plans for the summer, or packing up and saying good-bye to friends and colleagues, as we head back to our home country or onto to new locations.
We will also be saying goodbye to valued colleagues this summer as they move back home or to new locations around the world. We thank them greatly for all they have contributed to YIS over the years and know they will be deeply missed. We will be saying good-bye to:
- Susan Yamamoto
- Bronwyn Finnimore
- Yumi Mural
- Leanne Erickson
- Michelle Trefren
- Clint Hamada
- Sangha Majumdar
- Alyson Hilbourne
We wish them well in their new adventures!
It is also a time of transition for our students staying at YIS as they move onto new grade levels and for our Grade 5 students who will be moving into Middle School.
Our teachers are in the process of making up the new classes for next school year. This is a very careful and involved process as we try to ensure the classes have a balance in terms of gender, nationality, language needs and children who have specific learning needs. We also endeavour to place children who work well together. The current grade level teachers work collaboratively to mix the classes and gain input from our single subject teachers, learning support teachers, EAL teacher and our school counsellor. Our teachers put a lot of time and consideration into this process. Having worked with the children over the year they have a very good understanding of the class dynamics. Once we have decided on the classes, a teacher is assigned to a class. We know this is often an anxious time for parents and children wondering who their new teacher will be. Please note, we are unable to take requests for specific teachers, as to do so we would have to honor the requests of all parents and this would not allow us to maintain the balance that we seek in the classes. We will be sending home a letter at the end of the school year to inform you of your child's teacher for the coming school year. Please note we do not send home class lists at this time as we are still adding students over the summer months. If you have any concerns about your child, then please speak with your child's teachers so we are aware of the concerns and can help support your child during this transition time.
We have a number of new teachers who will be joining YIS in August. They are:
- Beth Saez - ELC
- Mario Saez - G5
- Helen Hutton - G5
- Graham Laing - EAL
- Elizabeth Mason - Music
- Sarah MacDonald - Drama
We look forward to welcoming them to YIS.
The ES reports will be available to parents on Wednesday 15 June at 3:00 pm. Please access your child's report through the parent portal on Veracross. If you need assistance please email firstname.lastname@example.org Please access your child's report before June 22, 2016, after this time our data base gets rolled over for the following school year.
Schedule Next Year
Next school year, the whole school will be adopting a new 10 day rotating schedule. This means rather than working Monday through Friday on Week A or Week B, the schedule will follow Day 1, Day 2 and so on. The benefit of this schedule is that students do not miss the same classes if there is no school on a Monday or Friday, when typically school is out of session for holidays or teacher PD sessions. Elementary School Activities (ESA) will still happen on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This will take a bit of getting used to for all of us and will mean students and parents will have to remember things such as PE kit on different days, for example if PE is on Day 1, Day 3 and Day 8. The days of the week will be highlighted on the school calendar, on the parent portal. The teachers will share the schedule when they start at the beginning of the school year.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the PTSA for all their hard work in supporting the many events in the Elementary School over the school year. We recognize the many hours the PTSA devote to planning the fund raising events that help to fund so many of the additional activities at YIS. On behalf of all of us in the elementary school ~ many thanks!
We would also like to thank class parents and volunteers who have assisted in planning class events, helping out in classrooms, being guest speakers, attending field trips, guest readers and supporting all the elementary events. The students and teachers really do appreciate your support ~ many thanks!
To all those students and families who will be leaving YIS at the end of the school year, we wish you all the very best and hope your move to a new location, either at home or a new country is a smooth one. We hope you will keep in contact with us and take fond memories of your time here at YIS.
This is just a reminder that school will finish at 12:00 noon on Friday 17 June. No lunches will be served this day.
We wish everyone a wonderful summer vacation and look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 22 August, Day 1.
