And So it Begins...

It does not seem so long ago that we were celebrating the accomplishments of the YIS Dragons 2016-17 school year. We saluted the progress and growth of the athletics program in addition to the individual accolades and team championships. Seventy-five percent of YIS secondary students took part in at least one sport this past year, which I assure you most other schools could not claim. It speaks to the quality of our coaches, the inclusiveness of our returning students and the eagerness of our then new students to get involved. If early indications are to be believed, that number will continue to grow and YIS is surely in for another exciting and successful year!

The athletics year officially begins next Monday, August 28, when the high school tennis teams and the high school girl's volleyball teams have their first day of tryouts. All interested students will meet at the gym, after which those trying out for tennis will make their way up to the YCAC. The girl's volleyball team will also have tryouts on September 1, before official practice beings on September 4.

The high school boys and high school girls cross country teams are next up, with their first tryouts taking place on August 30, with the boy's volleyball team staying in the gym, while the cross country runners will take off for a run down to Yamashita Park. Cross country will also continue practicing on September 1, while the boy's volleyball team will continue tryouts on September 4.

Middle School season kicks off on August 31 with boy's soccer and girl's volleyball. Again, everyone will meet at the gym, after which the boys will make their way up to the YCAC for their practice. The last group to get the season going is the middle school cross country team which will start on September 7.

Even though, the season 'officially' begins next week, it cannot emphasize enough how excited the students and coaches are, and why I feel 2017-18 is going to be a special year. During the holidays, the students where already knocking on the door, ready to get things rolling. And while many schools will have a few eager athletes ready to get things started before the season officially starts, the enthusiastic participation of over 60 YIS boys and girls at an impromptu volleyball game this past Wednesday says plenty about the eagerness of YIS athletes! I get the feeling that a 75% participation rate is only the beginning.
