Applying to YIS

Thank you for your interest in applying to Yokohama International School. The step-by-step process for applying to YIS, most of which is done online, is shown below. In addition, we encourage families to visit the school if possible. Visits may be arranged either before or after you submit an application. If you have not already done so, please review our Admissions Policy and if you have any questions about our policy, the eligibility of your child(ren), application deadlines, etc., please contact our Admissions Office.

Admissions Process

1. Review Our Admissions Policy

Before submitting your application, please make sure to review our Admissions Policy, in particular the sections on Eligibility Requirements and Application Timing. If you are unsure about whether your child is eligible for admission or have questions regarding any other aspect of the admissions process, please contact our Admissions Office at admissions@yis.ac.jp or +81(0)45-622-0084.

2. Submit Online Inquiry and Pre-Application Form

Click here to access our online inquiry and pre-application form, where you will provide some basic information about your family, potential applicant(s) and submit any questions you might have. This form also serves as a request for the link to our online application.

If you have already received the link to the online application, you do not need to complete this form.

3. Submit Online Application and Related Documents

After receiving the link from our Admissions Office, go to the online application and complete all the steps listed. Most of the information can be completed online, but there will be some forms to download and documentation to send in separately. You will find detailed instructions in the online application.

4. Read and Respond to Admission Decision

When your admission decision is available, we will send you the decision letter by regular post and also notify you by email. If an offer of admission has been made, we ask that you contact our Admissions Office within one week to confirm your intention to enroll.

5. Complete Online Enrollment and Pay Registration Fee

Once you accept the offer of admission, we will send you a link to our online enrollment portal. After logging on to the portal, you will be asked to confirm or update information provided at application, fill in some additional information and complete an enrollment agreement. After completing the online enrollment process and paying the one-time, non-refundable Registration Fee, enrollment will be complete.

Application Fee

A non-refundable application fee is due and payable at the time of application. Please note that applications are not considered complete – and therefore the screening process may not begin – until payment of the application fee is confirmed. The non-refundable application fee (25,000 yen) may be paid by credit card online, bank transfer or by cash in person at our business office.

Materials To Prepare

In addition to completing the online application and paying the application fee, you will need to provide the following items:

All Applicants

  • Digital photo of the applicant
  • Copy of passport photo page
  • Certificate of physical examination (signed by a physician)

Elementary School Applicants

  • Official school grade reports for at least one academic year
  • Confidential recommendation* from applicant's classroom teacher and countersigned by the school principal or head of school

Middle School Applicants

  • Official school grade reports for at least one academic year
  • Two confidential recommendations to be completed and returned directly by recommending English teacher and other faculty member and countersigned by principal or head of school

High School Applicants

  • Official school grade reports for the three most recent academic years
  • Official transcript from any current or previous high school(s) attended in grade 9 and above
  • Two confidential recommendations to be completed and returned directly by recommending English teacher and other faculty member and countersigned by principal or head of school
  • Math placement recommendation from current mathematics teacher

Japanese Applicants

  • If applicant and both parents are Japanese citizens, a letter from parents stating reasons for applying to international school


*Note: All required documents should be sent directly to our Admissions Office.

Application Timing

Our school year begins in late August and ends in mid-June. Most students enroll at the beginning of the school year in August or just after the Winter Break in January. However, applicants residing outside Japan may enroll at any time during the school year. (Enrollment after May 1st is normally not possible but may be considered on a case by case basis for overseas applicants in consideration of special circumstances.)

Applicants Residing Outside Japan

We accept and review overseas applications throughout the year on an as-received basis. Once the application is complete, including receipt of school records, confidential recommendations and payment of the application fee, we usually issue a decision within a week or two. Although we do not have set application deadlines for applicants coming from outside Japan, if you wish to enroll at the beginning of the school year in August we encourage you apply by mid-March (mid-February for high school applicants). If you wish to start in January, we advise you to apply by mid-November.

Applicants Already Residing in Japan

Applicants already residing in Japan may apply to enroll at the beginning of the school year. Under special circumstances (such as transfer from schools running on a Japanese school calendar), and at the discretion of the relevant principal, mid-year enrollment may also be allowed.

  • Japan-resident applicants to our Early Learning Center should apply by early April. After initial screening, we will notify you by the end of April whether you are invited to bring your child in to an interview as the next stage of the screening process. The interviews take place in early May, and notification of admission decisions will be made by the end of May.
  • Japan-resident applicants for our elementary and middle school may apply at any time. However, notification of admission decisions will depend on anticipated space availability, and for grades in which availability is expected to be limited, decisions may not be announced until mid-April.
  • Japan-resident applicants for our high school are advised to apply in December and no later than January 20th. Notification of admission decisions will initially be made by the end of February, with final notification by the end of April for any students initially placed in the wait pool. Applications submitted after the deadline/recommended application period may be considered, but space availability is likely to be more problematic.
