Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year
I trust this finds you all relaxed as the summer break draws to a close and hope you can reflect back on some quality family time during the holidays. To those who are new to YIS and perhaps Japan: I hope you have started to find your feet and that you are excited about the time ahead and being part of the YIS family. Any move can be stressful, but we have an amazing community here that will make the transition as easy as possible. So please reach out and make use of the support that is available. I look forward to meeting many of you at the new family orientation day on August 17th. To our returning families: it will be great to see you on campus again and start another year together.
The school year is always a busy one and the first few weeks can be particularly so as we offer a variety of events to inform and orientate everyone back into school routines. Our hope is that you will take advantage of all the opportunities that are available. Please refer to the calendars on the parent portal and the website and try to attend the information sessions that are planned. At the same time, please remember that our teachers and administrators are always available to answer your questions about the learning program and your child's progress. We do have conferences and other opportunities during the year for formal interviews and written reports, however I know that sometimes you may have a particular question or need further information. Please feel free to contact the teacher directly anytime during the school year and make an appointment so you can find out what you need in a timely fashion. Close communication between home and school is important and we want to assist with this as much as we can.
Another great source of support and community involvement is the Parent Teacher Student Association. Debra Reiskind Bajaj is our PTSA president again this year and she and her team have already made plans for a number of coffee mornings that will allow you to meet others within the school and also some fun activities you may wish to get involved in. (See the PTSA welcome message on this site for details.) Of course the biggest community event of the year is the PTSA-organized annual Food Fair, which is only a few months away on November 5th. There is still much to do in preparation for this, so please think about getting involved and helping out.
When you do come to the campus, please take a look at some of the new posters that are placed around the school. As many of you know, we changed our mission statement last year to Live Learn Lead, and I am excited about how this has opened up discussions about what this means to all members of the school community. Of course a mission is more than posters, it is how we approach all we do in our school, both individually and as an organization, and we look forward to sharing stories of Live Learn Lead in action throughout the year.
I hope your children enjoy the remaining days of their summer break and are refreshed and excited to see their classmates when school begins on August 21st. For the new families who may be joining us a bit later in the school year, we look forward to welcoming you when you get here. My best wishes to you all for the year ahead and I look forward to seeing you around the campus in the near future.
